Washington, D.C. – The Health Innovation Alliance released the following statement following the release of the Health Data, Technology, and Interoperability: Patient Engagement, Information Sharing, and Public Health Interoperability (HTI-2) proposed rule:
This proposal is a great example of the government growing itself from within. The rule would expand the federal government’s role in how health information is shared, and which technologies are developed and adopted. New certification programs will place significant cost burdens on the healthcare industry and taxpayers, and it is unclear how successful they will be at achieving greater data sharing. What is clear is that ONC knows this rule is an overreach of their authority because they include ‘severability’ language to try to protect the rest of the proposal if other pieces are struck down.
The Health Innovation Alliance appreciates ONC’s work to standardize public health data, and we look forward to continuing to work with ONC and the rest of HHS to encourage the exchange of healthcare information through a sensible balance of government regulation and private-sector innovation.
