The discussion of how to use artificial intelligence (AI) has intensified as technology and AI have become more integrated into our daily lives. With that, there has been increased interest in AI innovation, privacy, and regulations across all industries, including healthcare.
HIA identified a gap in the discussion about using artificial intelligence in healthcare. Most conversations about AI would only briefly touch on health care and how it could be used, failing to delve into privacy and HIPAA issues, how industry professionals were already using AI, and legislative and regulatory matters related to its use.
Identifying this need, HIA worked with a broad group of stakeholders to create principles intended to guide Congress and the Administration. The principles focus exclusively on AI in healthcare, allowing for innovation and protection of patients and their information.
HIA’s principles for AI in health care:

Risk-Based Approach: Regulation of AI in healthcare should be proportionate to risk
Transparency: Patients, users, and regulators of AI should have access to information about how the technology is being used, but not to proprietary information
Privacy: Any use of health information by AI should be compliant with current laws and regulations, including HIPAA
Responsibility – Developers and users of AI programs in health care should adopt and adhere to best practices and processes
Equity: AI tools should mitigate bias and be available for all users, not just those who can afford it
