Washington, D.C. (February 9, 2022): Today the Health Innovation Alliance (HIA) issued the following statement of support for “The Health Data Use and Privacy Commission Act.” introduced by Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D.
(R-LA) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) creating a new Commission to start modernizing our health privacy laws and rules:
“The multiple, conflicting, and confusing health data privacy rules need to change to better work for patients. The foundational law HIPAA was passed in 1996–when use of the fax machine was near its peak. It is past time we modernize this framework to allow for technology to reach its full potential as a critical tool to improve health care delivery and outcomes.
We are proud to join with patient and provider groups, technology organizations and others in support of this important legislation, and thank Senator Cassidy and Senator Baldwin for their leadership on this critical issue.”
