Washington, D.C. – The House Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Innovation, Data, and Commerce released an updated draft of the American Privacy Rights Act in advance of a markup Thursday, May 23.
The following statement should be attributed to Brett Meeks, Executive Director of the Health Innovation Alliance (HIA).
“We appreciate the important work the Energy and Commerce Committee is doing to crack down on suspect data practices to protect consumers, and we thank Chair McMorris Rodgers and Ranking Member Pallone for incorporating needed changes to ensure activities like medical research and promoting patient safety are not stopped by conflicting requirements. We will continue to work with the committee to fix some outstanding issues, including:
- Favoring the ability of companies to perform market research over the ability of scientists to conduct medical research,
- Leveling the playing field so privately funded medical research is not disadvantaged compared to publicly funded research, and
- Eliminating the private right of action that would increase civil litigation.”
