Health Innovation Alliance Accepting Applications for New "Innovation Connector"

New initiative will link investors and emerging companies with federal policymakers to bridge the gap between Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, DC (February 26, 2019): Fresh off its relaunch event at the annual HIMSS conference, the Health Innovation Alliance (HIA), formerly known as Health IT Now, announced it is accepting applications for participation in its newly formed Innovation Connector. The deadline for entries is March 31st.

HIA's Innovation Connector will link investors and emerging companies with federal policymakers to facilitate meaningful conversations, providing a setting for entrepreneurs to share about the barriers they have faced succeeding in the healthcare marketplace. Policymakers will learn about the real challenges that are preventing these innovations from reaching the market, as well as creative solutions to bringing value to the healthcare system.

Catherine Pugh, Senior Director of Government Affairs for Health Innovation Alliance, released the following statement:

"2018 was a banner year for emerging companies in the healthcare technology space and their investors, with more than $14.6 billion invested in digital health from over 1,200 unique investors, according to one report. Despite this, there remains a deep divide between the new ideas generated in Silicon Valley and the laws and regulations enacted in Washington, D.C., with patients losing out as a result."

"Our Innovation Connector will change this dynamic. We will ensure Congressional and administration personnel benefit from the creativity of the solutions churned out by these emerging companies and that these health IT disruptors are able to advocate effectively for their cause. We look forward to reviewing
applicants' submissions in the weeks ahead."

The Innovation Connector is an outgrowth of HIA's first-annual "Startup Day" last fall, in which nearly a dozen leaders from the startup community joined the coalition for a day of high-level meetings with key Congressional and White House personnel. The event was followed with an advocacy training day in New York City.

Planned events for the Innovation Connector in 2019 and beyond include:

  • Policy briefings focused on timely issues that are impacting the health IT startup and investment community;

  • Listening sessions where members can hear from leading healthcare companies and investors influencing the future of the marketplace;

  • Networking opportunities for where members can discuss opportunities and challenges they have faced working with federal programs;

  • Media and visibility events highlighting innovative policy collaborations

  • Regular electronic communication to highlight news, events, and opportunities; and

  • Annual policy summit and "Innovator Showcase" in Washington, D.C.
