Health IT Now Endorses the STREAMLINE Small Cell Deployment Act

Letter of support precedes July 31st briefing on 5G technology and telehealth

WASHINGTON, DC (July 26, 2018): Health IT Now - a broad-based coalition of patient groups, provider organizations, employers, and payers supporting health information technology to improve patient outcomes - released a letter of support this week for S. 3157, the STREAMLINE Small Cell Deployment Act

The bill, sponsored by Senators John Thune (R-SD) and Brian Schatz (D-HI), would streamline the deployment of "small cells" - small wireless facilities that sit atop streetlights, poles, and buildings - which comprised 62 percent of all wireless deployments for the nation's largest wireless provider in 2017 and are central to the building of a seamless, nationwide 5G broadband network.

In its endorsement letter, Health IT Now called the bill, "an important step forward to simplify the process and timeframes for approvals for small cell deployment," and thanked the sponsors for their "leadership in building a technology infrastructure supporting American innovation."

Health IT Now Executive Director Joel White added the following statement:

"5G technology is on the way and, with it, the promise of significant advances in telehealth and other innovative models of care delivery - but only if we have the infrastructure in place throughout the country to put these tools to use most effectively. By expediting the deployment of 5G small cell wireless facilities, this bipartisan measure will help ensure that more Americans can reap the benefits of our rapidly changing technology landscape, regardless of their zip code. We commend Senators Thune and Schatz for their leadership on this forward-thinking proposal and are eager to do our part to get it across the finish line," said HITN Executive Director Joel White.

Health IT Now will also host an open-press Congressional briefing on 5G wireless and its implications for telehealth on Tuesday, July 31st at 2 PM in room 562 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building. For details click here. To RSVP, email
