HITN's Opioid Safety Alliance Assembles Broad Support for Telehealth, ePA Bills Ahead of Committee Hearing

Ahead of Energy & Commerce Health Subcommittee hearing, three bills on the docket earn praise from HITN's Opioid Safety Alliance, others

WASHINGTON, DC (April 11, 2018): Health IT Now's Opioid Safety Alliance - a working group of prescribers, dispensers, professional societies, and patients advocating for the use of technology to fight illegitimate opioid use - led broad coalition letters endorsing separate telehealth and electronic prior authorization measures to tackle the opioid crisis ahead of today's Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee hearing

The Alliance assembled nearly a dozen organizations in a letter of support for the Access to Telehealth Services for Opioid Use Disorders Act while leading nearly 20 groups on a letter endorsing the Standardizing Electronic Prior Authorization for Safe Prescribing Act of 2018.

The bills, slated for discussion today at a 2:15 PM hearing of the Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, effectuate key goals of the Alliance by easing barriers to telehealth services for victims of opioid misuse and by using electronic, automated communications to safeguard the prior authorization process from fraud and abuse.

HITN previously penned a letter of support for the Improving Access to Behavioral Health Technology Act, also on the agenda for today's hearing, last fall.

HITN Executive Director Joel White released the following statement:

"By including three separate HITN Opioid Safety Alliance priority bills as part of today's hearing, Chairman Burgess (R-TX) and members of the Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee are showing a real commitment to leveraging the power of technology to treat and prevent the scourge of opioid misuse. The Subcommittee's attention to these measures shows that the solutions we propose enjoy broad support - both in and outside of Capitol Hill - and can actually work to save lives and reduce health costs," said HITN Executive Director Joel White.
