Health IT Now Executive Director Joel White issued the following statement following Scott Gottlieb, M.D.’s confirmation hearing in his nomination to serve as Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration. Gottlieb yesterday testified at the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
“The health landscape is moving quickly and it is essential we have leaders across federal agencies who understand not just the policies and regulations, but also the technology and potential in health care innovation. To fully embrace the possibilities technology provides, it is important to have a regulatory system that welcomes and facilitates new tools while also protecting patient safety,” said White. “Health IT Now is encouraged by Dr. Gottlieb’s experience with software and his eagerness to embrace new technologies and a culture of innovation at FDA. We look forward to working with Dr. Gottlieb in modernizing the FDA’s bureaucracy and processes, particularly in the implementation of 21st Century Cures and the vast opportunities to improve the FDA’s recognition and use of technology and data solutions in fostering better, more efficient health care.”
